Excerpt from Author's Note: To those readers who remember me I feel that I owe an explanation of why I stopped writing after more than thirty books and why I have resumed writing after a lapse of a decade and a half. A long series of serious illnesses, two major operations, a wartime mission to South America, and a near-fatal accident forced me to put aside my typewriter. That I have resumed writing after having pretty much recovered my health is due to the persistent prodding of a long-time friend, Mrs. Julian Street, who is our neighbor in up-state Connecticut. . . .

. . . "Nonsense!" she countered. "Your whole life has been filled with adventures. Sit down and write about them the way you tell that at dinner parties. What if you have written some of them before? Don't forget that you and your books are unknown to the present generation of readers." . . .

. . . I have no doubt that this book contains numerous errors of fact, but my memory is not as good as it used to be and I have kept no diaries or notes. But I hope that those who read the following pages will find entertainment in these random reminiscences of my life on Adventure Road.
